Singer Shakira opens up on falling in love

“I know he’s the one person who is with me not because of any interest other than the love that unites us,” the 36-year-old singer says in the July cover story. “There’s nothing I can offer him beyond my womanhood — does that word exist in English?”

The universal language of love is something Shakira undeniably shares with Piqué, 26, her partner since 2011.

“For a few years … I was not feeling the love,” she says. “Suddenly I meet Gerard and the sun comes out.”

She attributes their lasting romance to appreciating each other’s individuality and space.

“He has his own world and that’s actually one of the healthiest things about the relationship,” she says.

But while Shakira may have the recipe for their balanced relationship down she’s taking the role of new mom to their 4-month-old son, Milan Piqué Mebarak, day by day.

“I’m still trying to figure it out,” she confesses. “And I have a feeling I will try to do the same for the rest of my life.

“Some people put it like it’s very idyllic, some people put it like it’s a torturing experience,” Shakira says about motherhood, “but it’s not quite one thing or the other. It’s like life — it comes with everything.
