Supermarket receives 440 pounds cocaine inside banana shipment

Supermarket workers were surprised to find hundreds of pounds of cocaine inside a banana shipment, according to police reports in Denmark.Police in Denmark said that workers at a supermarket chain discovered over 440 pounds of cocaine inside a banana shipment from
Colombia, last week.

Police Inspector Bent Isager-Nielsen said that workers at the Brondby warehouse for supermarket chain Coop, found about 275 pounds of cocaine in a pallet of bananas and another 176 pounds of the drug were found in a shipment of bananas in a warehouse in Hasselager.

Isager-Nielsen said that warehouse workers immediately contacted police.
“Coop responded as it should,” Isager-Nielsen said. “We have no suspicion of wrongdoing by the Coop supermarket chain,” he said.

Police said the cocaine had a total estimated value of over $14 million.
Coop spokesperson Jens Juul Nielsen said that the Colombian banana supplier has been contacted.

“We have informed our supplier in Colombia about it,” Nielsen said. “They check the goods before they are shipped to Europe so I wonder how this could happen. We are now working to improve control,” he also said.

This is not the first time that cocaine has been found inside a banana shipment.
Cocaine has been found in several storage bins owned by Colruyt, a major supermarket chain in Belgium.

It was mixed with a shipment of bananas from the port of Antwerp. 36 kilos were found in a warehouse in Sint-Katelijne-Waver.
Police are investigating whether the company knew of the illegal cargo transport.
